Debris Booms: A Legacy of Innovation at Tees Barrage

After more than 20 years of reliable service, the debris booms at Tees Barrage in Middlesbrough, United Kingdom (UK), have been replaced. This essential upgrade ensures the structure continues its vital role in protecting the environment and managing debris effectively.

Original installation: A benchmark in environmental stewardship

In 2001, we initiated a significant environmental project at Tees Barrage. Located within a 2,000-mile network of canals and rivers, it became a key hub for debris interception under the Canal & River Trust‘s charitable initiatives. The Tees Barrage was the first site to use our now globally trusted debris booms, setting a benchmark for debris management and environmental care.

Tees Barrage itself is a remarkable man-made structure spanning 70 meters across the River Tees, just upstream of Blue House Point near Stockton and is looked after by the Canal & River Trust charity. Built from reinforced concrete and structural steel, the barrage was designed to prevent flooding, regulate river flow and maintain consistent water levels.

The structure also features a road bridge, footbridge and a fish ladder – an innovative solution to help migrating fish bypass obstacles. 2025 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Tees Barrage. Officially opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1995, it has also improved the river’s water sports facilities by stabilizing its tidal section.

A modern upgrade: Continuing a legacy

The new Bolina Permanent Debris Booms at Tees Barrage are designed for long-lasting performance, ensuring the continued protection of the River Tees and its ecosystems. This upgrade reflects our commitment to providing high-quality, customized solutions for challenging projects, while supporting sustainable waterway management.

The effectiveness of this installation is demonstrated by its debris interception, as highlighted in a video by Aquatic Restorations, showcasing their conver boats clearing accumulated debris. Watch their video on LinkedIn.

Even nature seems to approve, as the Canal & River Trust team have captured otters hunting and socializing on the Tees Barrage boom – a testament to the structure’s harmony with local ecosystems. See the otters in action here.
